DISTINCTIVE WOOD
& EPOXY
Curtis Underhill moved from Canada to the United States in 2019, bringing with him a long-standing passion for woodworking and a clear sense of what fine furniture could be. After marriage and the arrival of his children, he channeled that experience into Spencer Mason Designs, a studio built around the belief that the existing market for high-end furniture was missing something: a genuine dialogue between organic natural materials and contemporary artistic mediums. By combining exceptional hardwoods with the color, movement, and contrast of epoxy resin, Curtis produces artisan furniture design that reflects both technical mastery and personal vision. His workshop in San Rafael is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, primarily by appointment.

The combination of exceptional hardwoods and custom epoxy resin is the studio's signature. The natural grain of the wood and the color and movement of the resin create a visual dialogue that mass-produced furniture simply cannot achieve.

What We Build
Custom Furniture Design for Every Room
Spencer Mason Designs produces a focused range of handcrafted furniture, each category built with the same commitment to natural materials, artistic epoxy work, and precise craftsmanship. Whether you need a statement dining table for a large gathering space or a narrow console for an overlooked entryway, the studio has the skill and the materials to build it right.
Custom Dining Tables
The dining table is the gathering hub of the home, and it deserves to be built as one. Spencer Mason Designs creates custom dining tables from exceptional hardwoods, with epoxy treatments and locally fabricated metal bases chosen to complement your space. Curtis also provides chair sourcing assistance to help you find seating that works with the table's aesthetic, creating a complete dining environment rather than just a single piece.
Custom Coffee Tables
Coffee tables are one of the primary formats Curtis uses to work through the relationship between wood and epoxy resin. Ocean-inspired treatments, dramatic grain patterns, and expressive artistic choices make each piece a living room centerpiece rather than a surface to set things on. Every custom coffee table is sized to your space and built to your design direction.
Custom Desks & Office Furniture
A workspace built from exceptional hardwoods and custom epoxy is a very different environment to work in than a standard office desk. Spencer Mason Designs produces custom desks and office furniture for home offices and executive environments, combining functional utility with the visual weight and natural character of artisan furniture design.
Custom Console & Entryway Tables
Entryways and hallways are often overlooked when it comes to quality furniture. A custom console table, sized precisely to a narrow or unusual space, transforms a transitional area into a considered part of the interior. Spencer Mason Designs builds console and entryway tables to fit the dimensions you actually have, not the dimensions a catalog assumes you have.
Custom Benches
Handcrafted benches from Spencer Mason Designs work as standalone seating, entryway pieces, or coordinated companions to a custom dining table. Built from the same exceptional hardwoods and finished with the same care as every other piece in the studio, a custom bench brings the same artisanal quality to a more versatile format.
Customization Options
Every custom commission involves a series of design decisions made directly with Curtis. Clients choose from available wood slabs, discuss epoxy color and placement, select edge profiles such as a subtle round-over treatment, and decide between locally fabricated custom metal bases or pre-made metal options. The level of involvement is entirely up to you, and every choice is guided by Curtis's expertise.
Available Furniture
Not every client needs a fully custom commission. Available furniture consists of completed original designs by Curtis, each one a finished piece of functional art furniture ready to find its home. Specifications and dimensions are predetermined, and pieces are available by inquiry subject to current stock. It is a direct way to own a Spencer Mason Designs original without the full custom timeline.
Client Experiences
What Clients Are Saying About Spencer Mason Designs
Every piece that leaves the San Rafael workshop goes to a client who chose to invest in something genuinely one of a kind. Read what those clients have to say about the process, the craftsmanship, and the finished pieces that now live in their homes across Marin County and Northern California.
How long does a custom furniture commission typically take from start to finish?
Custom commissions at Spencer Mason Designs generally take approximately one month to ten weeks, depending on the complexity of the piece and the design decisions involved. The timeline begins once the design direction is confirmed, the wood slab is selected, and the epoxy treatment and base style are agreed upon. More intricate pieces with detailed epoxy work or custom fabricated metal bases may sit toward the longer end of that range. If you have a specific deadline in mind, it is worth raising that early in the conversation so the timeline can be planned accordingly.Does the studio help with seating to go alongside a custom dining table?
Curtis does not manufacture chairs at Spencer Mason Designs. The studio's focus is entirely on woodworking and epoxy furniture. However, Curtis does provide professional chair sourcing assistance to help clients identify seating that complements the aesthetic of their custom dining table. This means you can still achieve a cohesive, complete dining environment without having to source chairs entirely on your own. The goal is to make sure the full picture works together, even if not every element comes from the same hands. What is the difference between a custom commission and available furniture?
A custom commission starts with your ideas, photos, or a specific spatial problem. You work directly with Curtis to choose the wood slab, the epoxy color and placement, the edge profile, and the base style. The piece is built to your exact specifications and dimensions, with a timeline of roughly one month to ten weeks. Available furniture consists of completed original designs that Curtis has already built. These pieces have predetermined specifications and are available by inquiry subject to current stock, offering a faster path to owning a Spencer Mason Designs original without the full custom process. What areas does Spencer Mason Designs serve for delivery?
The studio is based in San Rafael and serves clients throughout Marin County, including communities such as Ross, Tiburon, Mill Valley, Sausalito, Kentfield, Larkspur, Corte Madera, San Anselmo, Belvedere, and Novato. Delivery also extends to San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, and the East Bay, covering areas including Berkeley, Orinda, Danville, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Moraga, Piedmont, Pleasanton, Alamo, Diablo, and San Ramon. White-glove delivery and assembly is available throughout these regions, priced by destination. Workshop pickup from San Rafael is also an option. Can I visit the workshop to see the materials before committing to a commission?
Yes. The San Rafael workshop is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM, primarily by appointment. Visiting in person is a core part of the commission process. Clients come to the studio to compare wood slabs side by side, examine edge profiles, and discuss design direction directly with Curtis. This hands-on material selection experience is what separates a Spencer Mason Designs commission from an impersonal online furniture purchase. It is strongly encouraged for anyone considering a custom piece. What wood does Spencer Mason Designs primarily work with?
The studio's primary material is highly figured walnut, chosen for its dramatic natural grain patterns and organic character. Highly figured walnut refers to slabs with particularly complex, swirling, or pronounced grain formations that give each piece a visually distinctive surface. Because no two slabs are identical, no two finished pieces are the same. Epoxy resin is used alongside the walnut to introduce color, movement, and contrast, often in ocean-inspired treatments. The specific selection of any additional wood species is something that can be discussed directly with Curtis during a consultation.Does Spencer Mason Designs offer any smaller items beyond large furniture pieces?
Yes. In addition to the core furniture categories, the studio produces smaller accessory items including charcuterie boards and coasters. These are considered secondary to the main furniture mission of the workshop but are available. They are made with the same attention to material quality and craftsmanship that defines the larger pieces. For clients who want to experience the studio's work at a smaller scale before commissioning a major piece, these accessories offer a lower-commitment entry point. What metal base options are available for a custom piece?
Metal bases are an important structural and aesthetic component of many pieces at Spencer Mason Designs. For custom commissions, Curtis works with local Northern California metal fabricators to produce bases built specifically for the piece. These locally fabricated bases are designed to complement the wood and epoxy aesthetic of each individual commission. Pre-made metal base options are also available as an alternative, depending on the design requirements of the project. The choice between a fully custom fabricated base and a pre-made option is one of the design decisions made during the collaboration process.
